Avanti Women’s WonderWoman of the month of Giving Forward is Sandy Watt.  Sandy has had years of experience in the corporate sector holding key positions at CIBC, supporting the CIBC Run For the Cure, as well as at a number of advertising and marketing agencies as Account Director for major brands such as Tim Hortons and Kraft.  In addition to sitting on the Advisory Council for Avanti Women, and several other volunteer roles, Sandy has provided marketing support enabling the attainment of fundraising and program goals.  As National Director, Marketing and Communications for the Children’s Wish Foundation, she was key in launching the Foundation’s inaugural national major giving campaign.

Sandy recently made a career move to UNICEF Canada as the Deputy Director, Marketing.  UNICEF is a non-profit organization that works tirelessly to ensure children survive, wherever children’s lives are at risk.  She is using her skills to “give forward” everyday.

What do you love most about the work that you do?

Whether it was during my time in advertising or my current place in the charitable sector, feeling the work is making a difference. It’s meaningful.

How important have mentors been in your career?

Hugely important. I’ve had two amazing mentors who helped guide my career path, share their professional learning and inspire a true passion for advertising and marketing.

What is your most valuable resource?

My optimism. Always rose coloured lenses and glass half full in my world.

What advice do you have for women who are entering your profession?

Nurture your professional relationships – they’re not just there when you’re looking for your next job. Networks are an untapped resource for advice, experience and support, all the time.

If you could give advice to your 20 year old self, what would you say?

Remember to have fun and don’t work too hard. Work will always be there but the spontaneous (or planned) fun goes by in a flash.
